Schweizer Agriculture – Passionate Origination For SME's Growth

Irrigation

Irrigation is central to building resilient, productive agriculture, particularly in dryland areas where rainfall patterns are increasingly unpredictable. Our approach focuses on farmer-led, efficient and sustainable irrigation, using appropriate technologies such as solar-powered pumps, water storage, drip irrigation and locally suitable distribution systems. By improving access to reliable water, farmers can move beyond rain-fed production towards more consistent, year-round agricultural activity and improved food security.

Through Prime the Pump™, irrigation is viewed as part of a wider water-security system rather than simply the installation of a borehole. We combine water assessment, solar pumping, storage, groundwater stewardship, efficient irrigation and climate-smart cropping to make every litre of water productive. Our solutions are designed to start at a manageable scale and expand as water availability, farmer capacity, production performance, markets and financing allow—supporting sustainable livelihoods while strengthening resilience to drought and climate change.

Against the backdrop of the Farmer Field Day held on 25 September 2020 at Kanakantapa Resettlement Scheme, we were delighted to engage with UNDP officials through Prime the Pump™, a Schweizer Agriculture initiative. The engagement explored how cooperatives can benefit from solar-powered irrigation and cropping systems through higher yields, lower energy costs, reliable production, climate resilience and stronger farm incomes.

Brandina Banda, a livestock farmer and champion for women in energy efficiency, is advancing women-led agriculture with a 6kVA solar system that powers water pumping, storage and irrigation. This infrastructure will enable her to irrigate 4 hectares of citrus, legumes, maize and horticultural crops.
